Owing to LPG and WTO, there is a paradigm shift in the economic environment all over the world and they have not only posed threats but also thrown open abundant avenues of employment to the qualified people. These developments, together with the expansion (both intensive and extensive) in the economic activities, lead to the enormous increase in the demand for Management Studies. Kuvempu University took this as an opportunity and a challenge. By assuming social responsibility of providing access to higher education in Commerce/Business Studies to more number of students, and to train and supply the skilled manpower to meet the demands of the new economy, Kuvempu University has started the Department of Post-Graduate Studies in Management at Jnanasahyadri, the head-quarters of the University, during 2005-06 academic year.
Within a short span of three years, the Department has arranged/organised a number of special programmes/activities, besides the regular academic works, for the benefit of students and others. During this three-year period, the Department organized two National Level Seminars (two days each - one on Global Convergence on Commerce Education and another on Contemporary Issues in Banking, Finance and Insurance), more than two dozen Special Lectures, two short-term Courses on Critical Reasoning and Spoken English, etc for the benefit of the Students and others.
A Departmental Library has been established with more than 1000 titles worth Rs 3.8 lakh as a supplement to the well established Central Library on the campus. The unique feature of this Departmental Library is that it is established by the students for their benefits and it is managed by the students themselves. It possesses Reports, Books, Project Reports, etc which are highly useful to the student-community. It also possesses other study material pertaining to UGC's NET and other examinations/courses.
A Placement Cell has been established to train and place the students in different institutions/organisations including Public and Private Sector Undertakings and Multi-national Corporations. The Department has invited a number of experts from different industries and institutions to deliver lectures and to train the students. The focus of all these programmes, amongst others, is on the overall development of students including Soft Skills which is one of the qualities the Students should possess. The Department is proud to state that more than 90% of the students of first batch have already been placed in different institutions/organisations.
